Hairspray musical comes to screen

In the grand tradition of Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors and the forthcoming remake of The Producers, films that became musicals that became films again are all the rage. Three cheers, then, for Hairspray, the Ricki Lake-starring, high camp cult classic John Waters film that became a runaway Broadway hit and is now set to return to the big screen. For those who either haven't seen or don't remember the original (shame on you!) it followed pleasantly plump but fabulous teenager Tracy Turnblad (Ricky Lake before she did chatshows) in her quest to win a place on a local teen dance show, the heart of the show's star dancer and an end to racial segregation. Waters regular Divine starred as Tracy's mother, while Debbie Harry made a memorable turn as the bitchy mother of rival teen queen Amber Von Tussle. With cameos from Sonny Bono, Pia Zadora and Jerry Stiller, the resulting film was perky, brightly coloured and goofishly aimiable
