It may have been roundly panned by the American critics, but Disney were still laughing all the way to the bank as Mission to Mars scored an estimated $23.1 million in its opening weekend. Audiences clearly wanted to find out for themselves how bad a multi-million dollar Brian de Palma movie with a stellar cast could be. Following Mission in second place this weekend with a meagre $6.7 million at the box office was Johnny Depp’s Ninth Gate a supernatural thriller that fared just as badly with the press.
