Fallout might represent the sixth movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise, but the sight of Tom Cruise doing dangerous things in the name of entertainment is clearly still compelling. The latest in the movie series stormed the US box office to the tune of $61.5 million, according to studio estimates.

That's the most successful opening for a Mission movie to date, ahead of the strong likes of the second and director Christopher McQuarrie's previous effort, Rogue Nation. The movie is also having an impact worldwide, surging to $153.5 globally.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again stayed in second place, earning $15 million, while The Equalizer 2 actually fell a couple of spots to third on $14 million. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation dropped to fourth on $12.3 million. The week's second new arrival, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies couldn't compete, with the animated superhero comedy taking in $10.5 million.

In sixth was Ant-Man And The Wasp, which made $8.4 million, while Incredibles 2 took in $7.1 million at seventh. In eighth, we find Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom adding $6.7 million to its total, while Skyscraper earned $5.4 million. Finally, at 10th, The First Purge notched up $2.2 million.
