The Sinbad stories, birthed in the Middle East and first introduced to the West via The Arabian Nights, have proven a hardy subject matter for movies and TV, most famously in 1958's The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad. Now someone new is having a crack, with production company Studio 8 hiring writer Kyle Killen and director Miguel Sapochnik.
Not much is known at this point what they'll be bringing to the story, though it'll likely be some version of a quest by the wily Baghdad-born sailor, who hopes to make his fortune while encountering fantastical creatures.
Killen, who has written movies such as The Beaver and the upcoming Death Note, is also the creator of TV series including Awake and Lone Star. Sapochnik, who got his start as a storyboard artist, has worked extensively in TV, directing episodes of shows such as Banshee, Fringe, House, True Detective and Game Of Thrones, for which he won an Emmy for Battle Of The Bastards. The pair worked together when Sapochnik oversaw an episode of Killen's show Mind Games.
"Sinbad was a rare comprehensive and engaging pitch which lends itself to an international audience and big visual set pieces but also distinct and unique actor roles for a diverse cast of characters," Studio 8 said in a statement carried by The Hollywood Reporter. "This project is part of Studio 8’s ongoing commitment to working closely with filmmakers on the re-imagination of genres."
