Meryl Steep must have a thing for tricky political dramas.

Hot on the heels of news that she’s joining the cast of Lions For Lambs with Tom Cruise and Robert Redford, she’s also signed on for Gavin Hood’s Rendition, which is currently shooting in LA.

She’ll play a government official who puts an American-Egyptian into the secret police’s custody where a CIA analyst (Jake Gyllenhaal) witnesses him being tortured and then finds his own life falling apart as a result. Reese Witherspoon plays the pregnant wife of the torture victim.

Alan Arkin has also just joined, playing a senator, while Peter Sarsgaard is already on board. Hood moves to Washington shortly, followed by Morocco and South Africa.
