The Starling has been through at least two variations on its trip to the screen – at one point, director Dome Karukoski had Keanu Reeves and Isla Fisher attached to star. But its final evolution has Theodore Melfi calling the shots, reuniting with his St. Vincent star Melissa McCarthy, who stars alongside Chris O'Dowd and Kevin Kline. The trailer for the comedy drama is online.

McCarthy here plays Lilly, who along with husband Jack, has suffered the loss of their child. Jack is now in a mental health facility while Lilly confronts her grief largely alone. To add to her issues, combative Starling takes nest beside her quiet home. The feisty bird taunts and attacks her when she's trying to figure out her life going forward.

She's recommended the services of Kline's Larry, a former therapist who now works as a vet. Together, they work on Lilly's issues with the world at large and the starling in particular. The cast here also includes Timothy Olyphant, Skyler Gisondo, Daveed Diggs and Veronica Falcón. The Starling will be in Stateside cinemas (no word on a UK release yet) on 17 September ahead of hitting Netflix on 24 September.
