The success of Mel Gibson's war movie We Were Soldiers this weekend in the States proves that US audiences are still keen on supporting anything with a patriotic theme. Soldiers, which many UK audiences may find just a little heavy on the old star and stripes theme, took home a respectable $20.2m to its nearest competitor, the Josh Hartnett romantic comedy 40 Days and 40 Nights which made $12.5 million. It's another good opening for Gibson, who shows no signs of losing his popularity at the box office, although this weekend's take was some way shy of his personal best - a whopping $34.2 million for Ransom.
