The Beach Bum

You’ve seen him head into space on a mission to save humanity. You’ve seen him ponder life’s cosmic mysteries while solving crimes in the Deep South. And now, you can see Matthew McConaughey smoking a giant spliff and channelling his inner hippie in the first trailer for The Beach Bum. The latest film from grungy auteur Harmony Korine stars McConaughey as Moondog, a drifting slacker with a penchant for prose and partying. Watch him do his thing:

It’s fascinating seeing Korine assemble such a starry cast – Isla Fisher, Jonah Hill, Snoop Dogg and Zac Efron also appear – and this one looks like a tripped-out stoner comedy-drama set to split audiences right down the middle. That’s par for the course from the filmmaker behind Spring Breakers and Trash Humpers. It’s a trip, too, to see McConaughey going this far-out at this point of his career reinvention, committing to a wild and unruly character. The current brief synopsis for the film is as follows: “The Beach Bum follows the outrageous misadventures of Moondog (Matthew McConaughey), a rebellious burnout who only knows how to live life by his own rules.”

The Beach Bum currently has a 22 March release date in the US, but nothing confirmed over here yet. No slacking please, Matthew.
