Fans of comedy, drama and the rat-a-tat dialogue that is the speciality of Gilmore Girls co-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino were happy to see that her style, albeit in a different form, return successfully with Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Now, with a hoard of Emmys on its mantelpiece, the show has announced a kick-off date for Season 2 via a new trailer.

The show follows Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), who thought her 1950s New York life was complete with a husband, kids and an elegant Upper West Side apartment. But when everything is thrown into chaos by his infidelity, she starts a very different path, looking to become a stand-up comic. Which is not easy at the best of times, and certainly not for a woman in the 1950s.

Yet with her chosen career seemingly on track after Midge's triumph at the Gaslight, the fallout from her takedown of Sophie Lennon (Jane Lynch) looms large, making her climb up the comedy ladder more challenging than ever. As the actual grind of being a comic begins to take its toll on her, the pressure to come clean to her family weighs on her – especially as her choices have a ripple effect on everyone around her.

The cast also includes Alex Borstein, Tony Shalhoub and Michael Zagan, and the series returns on 5 December.
