The 53rd annual Screen Actors Guild nominations are out, and it was a good year for both surprises and some familiar faces. On the film front, Manchester By The Sea, Moonlight and Hidden Figures were among those picking up multiple chances to win.
Casey Affleck continues to draw attention for his Manchester work, and there were nominations for Denzel Washington, Ryan Gosling, Andrew Garfield and more. Somewhat of a surprise, given the film's muted reaction (commercially, at least) was Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic, with the movie also scoring an ensemble nod. Mahershala Ali was the person with most reason to smile, given his Supporting nod for Moonlight, his appearance among that movie's ensemble and his inclusion in the Hidden Figures ensemble nomination.
Repeat nominees included Meryl Streep (who could probably show up with a home video shot on her phone and be up for an award at this point), Amy Adams and Natalie Portman. The biggest surprise was probably Emily Blunt for The Girl On The Train. The film has received almost no attention elsewhere this awards season, and Blunt's addition meant that the likes of Isabelle Huppert and Annette Bening didn't make the list, raising a few eyebrows.
TV-wise, it was some of the usual suspects (your Game Of Thrones, your Downton Abbey) and some newcomers, including Westworld (with Thandie Newton making the cut) and Stranger Things, which has Millie Bobbie Brown and the ensemble in contention.
