It used to be that most of the scandal Madonna dealt with was what she generated. But for her second stab at directing (after 2008’s odd indie Filth And Wisdom), she’s tackling one of the most famous royal controversies in history – King Edward VIII’s affair with divorcee Wallis Simpson.

W.E. will follow the events that lead to Edward abdicating from the throne in 1936 so that he could marry his lover, a proposal that dragged the monarchy into constitutional crisis and led him to become one of the shortest ruling British Kings.

**Up In The Air'**s Vera Farmiga is currently considering the role of Simpson, which would make sense – what man wouldn’t give up the throne for her?

Madge is currently looking for someone to play Edward, and is also busy working on the script with Truth Or Dare director Alex Keshishian.
