Faith-based filmmaking has become a well-used genre these days, particularly in the States. And while many of the films see mixed critical reviews and occasionally middling box office, studios keep producing them. Luke Cage star Mike Colter has joined one of the latest, The Impossible.

Nothing to do with JA Bayona's 2012 tsunami thriller, but similarly based on a true tale, the film will star This Is Us' Chrissy Metz as Joyce Smith, a woman whose 14-year-old son fell into a frozen lake one winter in Missouri and proclaimed dead. But Smith stayed by his bedside, prayed for his survival and was shocked when his heart started beating. Colter will be Tommy Shine, an atheistic firefighter who saves the boy after reportedly hearing a voice that told him where to look.

Roxann Dawson is directing the film now in Canada, working from Grant Nieporte's script. Colter is also onto co-star in Skin, which will see Jamie Bell as a former Neo Nazi who makes a physical and mental transition out of his hate-filled former life. And then there's Luke Cage Season 2, which arrives on Netflix on 22 June and has just announced that Annabella Sciorra will play Rosalie Carbone, an underworld power player who will cause problems for our hero.
