Lucas forsakes film for new format

George Lucas has announced that Star Wars: Episode II will be shot using digital cameras instead of film. Lucas made the decision to use the format after comparing test footage shot on the new format with that shot on traditional film stock. Teams from Lucasfilm and and their digital effects division Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) worked with Sony and Panavision for four months to test the digital 24P cameras. Lucas said in a statement:
