While the recent focus of Lord Of The Rings attention has been on the sprawling Amazon TV series that digs into the story's deeper past, a big-screen to the world of JRR Tolkien's work has been quietly planned by New Line and Warner Bros. A new, stand-alone anime film called The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim is now in development.

Anime veteran Veteran anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama is on board to direct, working from a script by The Dark Crystal: The Age Of Resistance writers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. The story will depict the bloody saga behind Helm’s Deep, the fortress depicted in The Two Towers, and the man in whose honor it is named: Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan who spent much of his reign locked in a prolonged and costly war.

While Peter Jackson isn't working on this one, the aim is for it to connect in some way to his two trilogies, with Philippa Boyens, who worked on both set of movies' scripts present as a consultant. There will, however, be no link to Amazon's effort. But given the mere presence of the show, Warner Animation has this on a fast track, with production and voice casting already underway. Let battle commence!
