Between the big success of Deadpool and now Logan, you can expect to see more age-restricted superhero movies in future. Because while Hugh Jackman's last hurrah as Wolverine didn't quite match up to Wade Wilson's proper debut, Logan still opened strong in the States, launching with a studio-estimated $85.3 million.

Representing the most successful launch of the young year so far, Logan also impressed on the worldwide stage, opening first here in the UK and in almost all the countries it arrived, and taking in $152.2 million (Fox's third biggest international kick-off) for a $237.8 million global haul.

Horror satire Get Out stayed strong despite being pushed to second place with $26.1 million, meaning it has now earned more than $75 million on a budget of less than $5 million. Faith-based novel adaptation The Shack opened third, earning $16.1 million. The Lego Batman Movie fell to fourth, taking home $11.6 million, while new metaphysical drama Before I Fall made $4.98 million to launch in fifth.

John Wick: Chapter Two fell a few places to sixth, adding $4.7 million, while Hidden Figures, likely buoyed by Oscar success, stayed in seventh for $3.8 million. The Great Wall crumbled to eighth on $3.5 million, while Fifty Shades Darker was down to ninth and $3.4 million, while La La Land initially saw some additional money, but had to hand it over to another movie... Okay, that's the last Oscar joke we can make. The musical dropped to 10th place and $2.9 million. But while we're talking movies that had luck at the Oscars, Moonlight may not have cracked the top 10 after its Best Picture win, but it did add screens and cash, making $2.5 million this weekend to jump up to 12th place on the chart.
