Remember Skyline? The loony sci-fi FX showcase arrived in 2010 courtesey of tech-heads The Brothers Strauss (AvP: Requiem), and enjoyed a spirited rivalry with the similarly themed Battle: Los Angeles, released at almost exactly the same time. Neither was critically adored, but both did reasonably well at the box office. And while we might have predicted that, of the two, Battle: LA would be the one to get a follow-up, it's actually Skyline that turns out to be heading for a sequel. As just revealed at Cannes, Liam O'Donnell, the original's writer and producer, will be the director of **Beyond Skyline. There's a poster too.

Skyline was an alien invasion affair, in which the human race came off really rather badly. Eric Balfour (from Marcus Nispel's Texas Chainsaw remake) starred as our nominal hero Jarrod, with support from Scottie Thompson, David Zayas and Donald Faison.

The Strause Brothers always intended a franchise, to the extent that Skyline ends on a bonkers cliffhanger. While nothing is yet known about Beyond Skyline's plot, and without wishing to get too far into spoilery territory for those who missed the original, the poster does hint that the newly-bodied Jarrod and a partner will be continuing the fight on alien-occupied Earth.

Whether any of the cast will be returning remains to be seen. There's no start-date yet, but the Cannes wheeler-dealering is presumably ongoing. If you care to follow Beyond Skyline's progress, there's a Facebook page.
