Narco Sub is one of those projects that just floats in the depths of development for years while filmmakers come and go. Originally targeted for Tony Scott, it now appears to be surfacing with Game Of Thrones veteran Brian Kirk directing and Liam Neeson wanted for the lead.

The thriller, which has a script by David Guggenheim, finds a disgraced American naval officer (Neeson, if he signs) forced to pilot a submarine loaded with cocaine past the US Coast Guard’s watchful eye. And given what happened the last time Neeson was aboard a cinematic sub in K-19: The Widowmaker, does anyone expect this mission to go well?

Kirk, whose only film-directing gig so far was indie drama Middletown, nevertheless has plenty of TV experience in addition to Thrones. He’s worked on the likes of Dexter, Great Expectations, Luther, and Boardwalk Empire. He’s taking over a project that, since Scott’s death, has attracted attention from such varied filmmakers as Antoine Fuqua and Doug Liman, one that might actually get moving at last.
