Lethal Lopez

J Lo packs a weapon for cop drama

All loved up she might be, but Jennifer Lopez is putting aside rom-coms and real-life romance and taking up a weapon for a taste of something a little more gritty. Marking a conscious diversion from the distinctly light and fluffy tone of her recent catalogue, Lopez is to star in her very own female version of Lethal Weapon entitled Double or Nothing. Now before you throw your hands up in despair and sagely point out J Lo's complete lack of the Mel Gibson mullet necessary for any true lethal weapon shenanigans, this isn't just a huge outrageous rip-off of an 80s staple – only a small one but with a big difference. Rather than simply copying the formula of renegade young cop teamed with reluctant vet, this spin on the mismatched partners schtick involves two female cops who must solve the murder of the male police officer they were both dating. The two-timing scoundrel is killed after illegally boarding a boat during a stakeout, presumably dying a happy man in the safe knowledge of the catfight that must surely follow his demise. The female love rivals are forced to work together to find the killer while also figuring out which one he truly loved. Wearing the producer's hat as well as starring in the picture, Lopez won't be, Empire Online suspects, prepared to play second fiddle to anyone so it will be interesting to see how this feminine addition to the cop genre is allowed to develop. Gibson and Glover's status as best of the buddy cops might just, we imagine, remain secure.
