Just days after his birthday, Leonardo di Caprio announced his ambition to host a party for hundreds of thousands of people next year. In a webcast on his official site, di Caprio announced that he would be Chairman of Earth Day 2000 - and that part of his duties would be to host the main American event in Washington DC on April 22, 2000. Half a billion people around the world are expected to join forces to bring attention to global warming during the month-long series of events surrounding Earth Day 2000. It's no surprise that Leo chose to join forces with the environmental charity - his site makes much of the star's commitment to green issues. 'I'm truly honoured,' Leo said of his appointment. 'Environmental issues have always been of the utmost importance to me.'
