UPDATE: Details of the film itself are still sketchy, but Deadline reports that Fishburne has now been joined in** The Colony**'s hungry, snowy wastes by Bill Paxton. Game over, man.

...

If you find that the thought of cannibals in a snowy, futuristic landscape dredges up unhappy memories of Highlander: The Source, there's hope in store. Like a staff member at Rekall, Laurence Fishburne will replace that memory for you, when he turns out for **The Colony{ =nofollow}, which is just about to start shooting in Toronto.

It's a sci-fi thriller about a group of ragged survivors attempting to sit out an ice age, while fending off attacks from feral cannibals. Think that bit in** The Road** with Garret Dillahunt, then reimagine it as a sci-fi comic book, and you may have something. Oh, wait, that's The Book Of Eli.

Fishburne's specific role hasn't been made clear, but it's looking likely that he'll be joined in his post-apocalyptic pursuits by Kevin Zegers (Wrong Turn, Transamerica, Frozen).

The director is Jeff Renfroe, who previously made the horror mystery One Point 0 with Udo Kier, Lance Henriksen and Bruce Payne, and edited the thoroughly wonderful Anvil. Renfroe is also one of four credited writers on the film, the others being Patrick Tarr (a set dresser and production designer by trade, who has copious writing credits on TV's Murdoch Mysteries), and Pascal Trottier and Svet Rouskov, both of whom are moving up to a full feature after several short films.

Toronto's Alcina PIctures is behind the project, which is being described as an indie, but has managed a not-unreasonable budget of $16m. If shooting goes according to plan, The Colony should be in the can by the end of March.
