Best known in the UK for his star turn in Lethal Weapon 4, Hong Kong action star Jet Li may be adding authentic kung fu action to the next two Matrix movies. According to the Hollywood Reporter, directors Andy and Larry Wachowski are keen to get him on board for the sequels, though negotiations are not yet underway. However, Joel Silver, producer of The Matrix as well as Li’s latest film Romeo Must Die, is said to have given his blessing to any deal with Li. But it’s uncertain whether the budgets for the Matrix sequels will cover Li’s fee, as his star is fast rising following the release of the aforementioned Romeo Must Die–the movie has grossed nearly $39 million in two weeks on US release. With deals already signed for original stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Ann Moss and Hugo Weaving, the Wachowski brothers could find themselves out of pocket when it comes to signing the action star–and after their Oscar success for The Matrix’s stunning special effects, they’ll surely be aiming for a hat trick.
