Fans of House, beware: the following story contains SPOILERS.

Kal Penn – Harold & Kumar's, erm, Kumar to some, House’s Dr. Lawrence Kutner to others – has sensationally decided to put acting to one side for the time being, to take up a position at the White House as part of President Barack Obama’s team.

No, this is not a joke, or a late April Fool’s. Penn, a fervent campaigner for Obama during his Presidential campaign and an all-round smarty pants who taught a class on Asian-American studies at the University of Pennsylvania last year, will join Obama’s team as an associate director in the Office Of Public Liaison.

The 31 year-old actor, whose real name is Kalpen Modi, is free to take up the new position after leaving House recently; his character was – TOLD YOU THERE WERE SPOILERS – killed off on the Hugh Laurie-starring show in the most recent episode.

“It’s not like I’m retiring from acting. I certainly intend to come back at some point, but right now I just felt like my calling was in public service, and so we moved forward with that," he told E! Online (we read the best sites).

Wowsers. This is pretty darned astonishing, but we wish Penn all the best in his new career. And let’s all say a silent ‘thank God’ that it wasn’t Wilson who got the chop. That, frankly, would have destroyed us.
