Though she may still return to bigger-scale films for the** Snow White And The Huntsman** sequel (nothing seems official about that idea yet), Kristen Stewart is sticking firmly with indies this summer, signing on to Camp X-Ray and Olivier Assayas’ new pic **Silas Maria.
For Camp X-Ray, a serious and politically-minded drama, she’ll play a young soldier who joins the military as a way of escaping the small town she grew up in. Yet once through boot camp, she discovers that she isn’t going to serve in Iraq as she thought, and is instead posted to Guantanamo Bay.
Facing hatred and abuse from the prisoners she’s guarding, she survives by building a friendship with a young man who has been locked up in the place for eight years. Peter Sattler wrote and will direct the movie, which has David Gordon Green’s backing as producer.
After that, she’ll move on to Silas Maria, which will find her co-starring with Chloë Moretz and Juliette Binoche, and taking over a role vacated by Mia Wasikowska.
The title refers to the film's Swiss location – it's a hamlet on Lake Silas – and the story centres on Binoche's aging actress who is "obsessed with her past choices", both personal and professional. Tied up in her life re-evaluation is the young up-and-comer who's now successfully reinterpreting a particular role that she once made her own. Moretz would be that newbie, named Joanne. Stewart’s role is as Binoche's assistant, who must deal with her boss’s outburst and foibles.
While Assayas wrote this for Binoche, who worked with him on Summer Hour****s and will likely do a great job, we’d almost be more excited if Sissy Spacek took the lead role, purely for the meta entertainment of two generations of Carrie White on screen...
