Kilmer Joins Herzog's Bad Lieutenant

Werner Herzog’s continuation – remember, as the man himself says, it’s not a remake – of the Bad Lieutenant series (we hesitate to call it a franchise) is currently one of the more fascinating projects out there. And today the cast – which previously meant Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes – filled out, and how, with a whole raft of actors signing up.

Most notable amongst them is Val Kilmer, who will play the partner of Cage’s eponymous crooked cop. We’re always glad to see Kilmer get work – he’s Iceman, he’s Gay Perry, he’s Nick Rivers, for God’s sake! – and this sounds like it could be just the ticket to get the best out of him.

But Kilmer isn’t alone in joining the cast. Take a deep breath, for Xzibit, Fairuza Balk, Brad Dourif, Vondie Curtis Hall, Jennifer Coolidge, Shawn Hatosy, Denzel Whitaker, Shea Wigham, and Katie Chonacas have also signed up, presumably lured in by the chance to work with Cage and Herzog in what we’re guessing will be a perfect storm of mental.

Filming on Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans (as only Herzog seems to be referring to it) will begin later this summer.
