1970s Bill Cosby/Richard Pryor comedy team-up Uptown Saturday Night has been the target of the remake patrol for years now and specifically by Will Smith, who bought owned the rights in 2002 and tried to set up a new version co-starring Denzel Washington. Nothing came of that effort, but Smith has now stepped back to simply produce, and Kevin Hart is making a deal to star.
The original, which Sidney Poitier directed and co-starred in, followed the misadventures of two friends who sneak out of their homes to visit a legendary – and illegal – nightclub. But when the place is held up, and their wallets are taken, the pair must recover a winning lottery ticket that was lurking within Cosby's wallet.
Smith's Overbrook Entertainment is working with Warner Bros. to find a director and then some co-stars for Hart, who has been enjoying a successful career. He'll be seen again in comedy Night School, which is out in the UK on 28 September. Now all we have to do is wait for Hart's pal The Rock to make fun of the new movie on social media...
