Real Steel’s Kevin Durand’s a busy guy at the moment: he’s snapped up roles in movies such as Noah, Devil’s Kno****t and young adult novel adaptation** The Mortal Instruments**. But apparently all that isn’t enough to fill his time, as he’s now signing on to true-life tragedy drama Fruitvale alongside Chad Michael Murray and The Help’s Ahna O’Reilly.

The ensemble piece, which Ryan Cogler wrote and will make his directing debut with, focuses on the death of a young black man while in police custody at the Fruitvale station of Oakland’s BART train system. This incident, which occurred on New Year’s Eve in 2008, was captured on camera and sparked protests and riots.

Durand will be one of the officers, with Murray as his partner. There’s no word on who O’Reilly will be playing, though we do know she’s joining a cast that already includes Chronicle’s Michael B Jordan, Octavia Spencer, Melonie Diaz and Tristan Wilds.

Fruitvale is in production now and has been given the backing of BART, providing the freedom to film at the actual station.
