Kate Winslet scored an Emmy for her performance in HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, so you can see the appeal of teaming back up with the channel for a new project. She's set to play a detective in Mare Of Easttown.

While the basic setup sounds like it was ripped from Crime Drama 101 – a small-town Pennsylvania detective investigates a local murder while (shocker!) her own life is crumbling around her – the presence of Winslet and the creative people involved lead us to think it could do something slightly more interesting.

Gavin O'Connor is on board to direct all the episodes, while Brad Ingelsby wrote the miniseries and serves as show-runner. It should be shooting this year.

Winslet recently worked on James Cameron's first Avatar sequels and will be seen in Roger Michell's Blackbird.
