It’s a right old Doctor Who-adjacent news day today. With word that Matt Smith is leaving the cosy confines of the TARDIS for pastures new, his most famous companion, Karen Gillan, has just scored a huge job. She’s set to become the female villain in Marvel’s **Guardians Of The Galaxy{ =nofollow}.

Yes The Girl Who Waited will now be The Girl Who Causes Big Trouble For Our Heroes in James Gunn’s ambitious, eclectic take on one of the weirder corners of the Marvel universe.

Lee Pace and Michael Rooker are already aboard as two of the nasties the Guardians will face, while Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and – assuming her deal closed – Zoe Saldana will be the protagonists, with Glenn Close and John C. Reilly also involved.

Gunn, working from a script by Nicole Perlman, Chris McCoy and more, is set to kick off shooting later this month in the UK. Guardians Of The Galax****y will reach our cinemas in August next year. For a full run down of what Guardians is all about, head here.
