Despite boasting explosive pyrotechnics, the charisma-fuelled star power of Bradley Cooper and an equal amount of nostalgic brand-name recognisability, The A-Team simply couldn’t sweep the leg of The Karate Kid, whose Jaden Smith showed box office earning power his pop would be proud of and debuting with $56 million. That’s more than even the studio bean-counters had figured, and you just know that every other company in town is now sending expensive gifts to the Smith household to secure his services (because we bet he doesn’t have any nice things already).

Hannibal, Murdock, BA and Face, meanwhile, had to settle for being the B-team in the charts, arriving in second place with $26 million. The adaptation of the ‘80s TV show was a modest performer given its $110 budget – but now it’ll have to hold on as summer starts to reach its peak.

Third place went to Shrek Forever After, which dropped 38% for $15.8 million, and a healthy running total of $210 million. G****et Him To The Greek took fourth with $10.1 million, while Killers slipped to fifth with $8.1 million.

The rest of the chart this weekend was filled with the following: **Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time **($6.6 million), dodgy dog comedy Marmaduke ($6 million), S****ex And The City 2 ($5.5 million), Iron Man 2 ($4.5 million), and, bringing up the rear in 10th place, Splice ($2.8 million).
