After a number of years getting drubbings for his English-language films, it seems John Woo is sticking with Chinese-language output for the time being, having just signed up to direct another called 1949.

The director, who first came to international fame for the fantastic likes of Hard Boiled and The Killer, will move on to the film once he's finished making historical two-part war movie Red Cliff. 1949 is another war-based movie, this time taking place at the end of World War II and the final years of the Chinese Civil War. Written by Lust, Caution scribe Wang Hui-ling, the film is described as a big budget ($40 million) romance. No further plot details have been announced. Chang Chen and Song Hye-kyo will play the leads.

Random John Woo fact: He used to send our Online Editor Christmas cards. He doesn't anymore, much to James' eternal festive dejection.
