With Mulder and Scully headed back to our screens early next year for a new run of The X-Files, creator Chris Carter and his team have tracked down the first new face to join Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny in the show. Community’s Joel McHale is on board to co-star{ =nofollow}.

McHale will play Tad O’Malley, the loudmouth anchor of a popular internet news network that forms an unlikely alliance with Mulder as the FBI agents return for a six-episode revival, presumably with more conspiracies to investigate or strange events to encounter. Or both. You know the drill.

Mitch Pileggi is so far the only veteran of the series returning alongside the leads, but there has been talk of appearances by William B. Davis’ Cigarette Smoking Man, Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) and John Doggett (Robert Patrick), though all that remains shrouded in rumour vapour for now. Shooting will happen this summer with the show debuting in the States on January 14. The sixth season of Community has just finished online via Yahoo Screen and now we wait to see whether the show scores a seventh season or that long-mooted, hashtag-approved movie.
