Last month saw the BBC’s well-loved Musketeers take their final bow. But only a few weeks on, one of them has been announced to take on a different type of threat.

Athos himself, Tom Burke, has just signed on to take the lead role in Cormoran Strike, a new crime series based on Robert Galbraith’s (aka J.K. Rowling) novels – The Cuckoo’s Calling, The Silkworm, and Career Of Evil. Set to start shooting in London over the next few months, the series will be split into seven one-hour episodes. Their air dates are still to be announced.

Sounding a little like a mix of Sherlock and The Night Manager, the series Rowling penned under her pseudonym follows Cormoran Strike (finally, a name to rival Stacker Pentecost…), a former army man now working as a private detective, aiming to help the police solve three mind-boggling cases.

RADA grad Burke has a long history with the BBC, having first made an impact in State Of Play back in 2003, before going on to take roles in Great Expectations, the much-missed The Hour, and this year’s War & Peace. He also popped up alongside Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives.

Rowling herself has form with the Beeb after The Casual Vacancy gripped the nation last year. “I’m thrilled about the casting of Tom Burke,” she says, “a massively talented actor who’ll bring the character to perfect life. I can’t wait to see Tom play him."
