There is often a fun story to tell behind the scenes of a film. And when you've got Jim Carrey channelling one of his comic heroes – Andy Kaufman – for the 1999 biopic Man On The Moon, the tale gets a little crazier. See the first trailer for the documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond.

Put together by American Movie director Chris Smith and producer Spike Jonze, the documentary unearths footage taken by Kaufman's former girlfriend Lynne Margulies and his ex-writing partner Bob Zmuda as Man On The Moon was being made, but which was held back for nearly 20 years (partly, as Carrey candidly says in the trailer, because the studio didn't want people to think he "was an asshole"). It shows how deep into character Carrey went as Kaufman and his own various characters, and the challenges of wrangling that performance into a movie. It's certainly a fascinating peek into both the man and the film's tricky production.

The documentary hits Netflix on 17 November.
