It’s one thing to try to impress your parents by, say, improving your grades at school or mowing the lawn without being asked. But heading off alone into the dark woods to master hunting and fishing? That’s taking it to the next level! Still, that’s exactly what Chloe Moretz is doing in The Rut, and Watchmen**’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan has just signed on to play her pop.

Back in 2010, the first rumblings of the film – which Kevin Caruso wrote and Jennifer’s Body** director Karyn Kusama is on board to direct – had Moretz loosely attached. Described as** Into The Wild** meets Winter’s Bone (indie cred grab alert!), **The Rut **sees Moretz play a girl whose father goes missing, forcing her to fend for herself and set her off on a path to prove she can live up to his wilderness teachings.

Kusama and the producers are busy shaking the pockets of investors to lock down the financing and, if they’re successful, the plan is to kick off shooting in October.

Morgan was last seen in **The Resident **and has the likes of Texas Killing Fields and Red Dawn waiting to get released. He’s also the star of a new US TV drama, Magic City, set among Miami mobsters in the late 1950s. Moretz was part of Martin Scorsese’s Hugo cast and has Tim Burton's Dark Shadows and comedy short compilation Movie 43 set for this year.
