He was courted for the role of a pirate in the last year – that would be Blackbeard in Pan, which ultimately went to Hugh Jackman – but someone else clearly thinks Javier Bardem would make a malicious mariner. The actor is in talks to be the villain in **Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tells No Tales{ =nofollow}.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bardem’s only at an early stage of discussions for the role, so he may not end up taking it. The film itself is still cloudy, but he’s apparently circling the part of a ghostly pirate captain who holds Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow responsible for the death of his brother and is on the hunt for a supernatural McGuffin to help his quest.

If Bardem takes the role, he'll be following his missus, Penelope Cruz, into the world of the pirates after her role in On Stranger Tides. Geoffrey Rush will return as Barbossa and the script, which has seen work from Terry Rossio and Jeff Nathanson, also features a new love interest for Jack who is yet to be cast.

Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are the men charged with captaining this particular ship, which will set sail next summer in Australia ready for a July 7, 2017 release date.
