James Gunn/Superman: Legacy

One of the key announcements of (relatively) new DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran's initial "Gods And Monsters" phase was a new movie based around DC's most iconic hero, called Superman: Legacy. At the time, Gunn said he was writing the script but hadn't decided whether he'd direct it. He's now taken to Twitter to confirm that he is — and why.

Gunn makes reference to having found something in the script that got him excited enough to want to direct it, especially since his studio executive duties will also mean he has less time to actively work on his own material.

He's previously said that the new movie would focus on a younger Supes (hence Henry Cavill ambitions to return to the suit exploding faster than Krypton), though skipping the well-trodden path of the origin story.

We'll have to see exactly what shape this new Superman film takes, but Gunn is working towards an 11 July, 2025 release date.

Back on the Marvel front, meanwhile, the writer/director still has Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 due on 3 May this year.
