James Cameron has already been creating waves today by saying that he thinks all entertainment will one day be in 3D, but his latest announcement for the Avatar universe falls more into the 2D category. For now, though, he’s hired Jumper author Steven Charles Gould to write four stand-alone novels set on and around Pandora.

It’s not the first writer announcement for Cameron, who has been on a hiring spree picking up scribes to help out on his three new planned trips to the fictional moon.

Despite the fact that he was talking, a couple of years ago, about working on the novel himself, he has apparently been unable to find enough time between trying to figure out the three new movies to actually finish the thing. Still, he thinks Gould is the best choice to carry on the effort: “Steven Gould is one of the shining lights in contemporary science fiction, and I’ve long admired the worlds and characters he’s created in his books and stories. We’re very fortunate to have Steven bring his formidable talents to the Avatar universe. He is already working closely with me and the screenwriters to flesh out the expanding world of Avatar.”

With work set to finally start next year on Avatar 2 and a plan for the three to be released in December 2016, 2017 and 2018, the Avatar universe is getting a lot bigger…
