World War II stories – particularly true ones – continue to provide source material for movies. The latest to hit the news radar is The Lost Airman, which will star Jake Gyllenhaal.
The actor is also attached to produce the adventure film, and it'll be based on recent declassified materials and Seth Meyerowitz's book The Lost Airman: A True Story Of Escape From Nazi-Occupied France.
Gyllenhaal is on to play Arthur Meyerowitz, an American gunner aboard a B-24 bomber when the plane is shot down over Vichy France in 1943. Hiding out in the French countryside, Meyerowitz became friends with Marcel Talliander, the founder of the legendary French resistance group Morhange. The pair, alongside heroic British fighter pilot R.F.W. Cleaver, orchestrated a plan to get Meyerowitz out of the country and to safety. Amazon Studios has grabbed the rights to the story and the material, and the team will now look for a writer and director.
Next up for Gyllenhaal is Netflix's Okja, launching via the streaming service on 28 June. He also has Boston Marathon bombing survival drama Stronger due in US cinemas on 22 September.
