While he's more normally found in smaller indie fare, Jake Gyllenhaal has not shunned the idea of appearing in a big comic book movie, showing up as Quentin Beck (AKA Mysterio) 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. He's tapping into the printed form again for a future film, signing up to star in – and produce – an adaptation of Robert Kirkman's comics tome Oblivion Song.
Kirkman created the title with artist Lorenzo De Felici in 2018, and the story takes place a decade after 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia were suddenly lost in a cataclysmic event named Oblivion. The government made every attempt to recover them, but after many years they gave up. But protagonist Nathan Cole hasn’t, making daily trips to find those lost.
New Republic Pictures grabbed an option on the comic from the Walking Dead creator after Universal let it go, and this movie falls under the deal between that company and Gyllenhaal's own Nine Stories company.
The next step will be to figure out the script and find a director. Next up for the actor in terms of cinema release is Antoine Fuqua's The Guilty and Michael Bay's Ambulance.
