Cannes selection snubs German films

Pity the German film industry. It's been eight years since the Teutonic trailblazers had one of their films picked for competition in Cannes. Now they've been told in no uncertain terms why - it's because they've got no style. That's the opinion of the Cannes Film Festival's new artistic director Thierry Fremaux. Interviewed by German magazine Der Spiegel, Fremaux explains that after viewing sixteen German films for Cannes, he decided that they 'lacked an unmistakeable style.' Then Fremaux went in for the kill, adding that German cinema was 'to a certain extent still in the antechamber. It still needs a bit of time to be tended to and to let it grow and mature'.
