With a hefty $41.1million opening for the second film at the US box office this past weekend, it was all but inevitable that the Insidious horror franchise would cough up another chapter from the realms of The Further. And so it has come to pass, with eOne, FilmDistrict and Sony partnering up to put a third instalment into development{ =nofollow}.

Leigh Whannell, who wrote both of the previous films (director James Wan had some input into the story), is back to craft the new script and Jason Blum and Oren Peli will produce via Blumhouse productions.

As for what will actually happen in the new film, that’s very much up to Whannell, although given that he’s gotten two doses of horror out of the spirit realm, we can expect more haunting.

A bigger issue is whether any of the unfortunate Lambert Clan (including Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins) will once more be bewitched, bothered and bewildered by forces from beyond. There’s a chance Whannell could move the story elsewhere, especially given the flexibility of paranormal investigators Specs (Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson), who could continue the story with new characters.

One person who probably won’t be coming back is Wan, who has said he wants to move on from the horror genre – particularly since he’s currently being given the chance to flex other muscles making the new Fast & Furious film. If he does leave it behind, he goes out on a high after Insidious: Chapter 2 and **The Conjuring **earlier this summer.
