After the critical mauling of Swept Away, which preceded a stright-to-video release in the UK, Madonna has decided to stay off our screens for the time being by providing a voice for Arthur, the new CGI film written and directed by the supremely busy Luc Besson. The story is adapted from a series of children's books written by Besson himself - The Fifth Element was written by Luc Besson the teenager, so he's obviously in touch with his inner child. It concerns Arthur, a ten year old orphan who, in an effort to save his dear old granddad's house from nasty developers, sets off on a quest for treasure in the land of the Minimoys, the very small folk who live in harmony with the world around them. Madonna will provide the voice of Princess Selenia, who accompanies Arthur on part of his journey through a forbidden city. Not much else is known about the film, as Besson likes to keep things pretty close to his chest prior to filming, but the idea of the director of Leon, Nikita and Subway letting his imagination run riot in a big budget CGI world certainly has a certain je ne sais quoi about it.
