Hop Still Top Of US Box Office

This weekend at the US box office turned into a battle of the Brands as Hop (featuring the Easter Bunny EB, voiced by Russell Brand) prepared to defend its spot at the top of the charts from competition that included Arthur (starring, er, Russell Brand.) In the end, it was the bunny what won it, as Hop held on, earning a healthy $21.6 million and leaving Arthur eating its jellybean-littered dust.

The remake of the Dudley Moore comedy suffered from negative reviews and could only rustle up $12.6 million. Perhaps now really isn’t the time for people to be laughing along with a drunken billionaire, no matter how much the movie tries to make us like him. Despite coming in third, Joe Wright’s Hanna proved to be one of the bigger winners of the weekend, earning above expectations with $12.3 million. Nipping at Hanna’s heels was Soul Surfer, based on the inspiring true story of Bethany Hamilton, the teen surfer who lost an arm in a shark attack, but fought her way back to the sport she loved. Courting the Christian crowd, the film earned $12.3 million and fourth place. Fifth was horror pic Insidious, which took $9.7 million.

Your Highness crashed and burned like a knight set roasted by a dragon, with the James Franco/Danny McBride comedy limping into a sixth place launch and $9.5 million, while Source Code fell to seventh with $9 million. Limitless was eighth with $5.6 million, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid sequel Rodrick Rules went down to ninth and $4.8 million. And finally, sitting in 10th, we find The Lincoln Lawyer, which added $4.6 million for a $46.4 million total so far.
