John Fusco, the writer behind Hidalgo and The Forbidden Kingdom, has signed on to adapt Cliff Graham's book Day of War for the screen, a Biblical-ish epic about the young King David. Think 300 with more slingshots. The book's the first of a series called "Lion of War" that Graham, a US military veteran, is planning.

The story follows a warrior called Benaiah who joins a band of mercenaries led by the young David, still a warlord rather than a King, and leading a motley crew who could turn on one another at any moment.

The film's set to be directed by David L. Cunningham, who - god help us - brought us The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising, a pretty appalling adaptation of a great book. Let's hope he doesn't make the hero a Yank this time around, and that it ends up rather better.
