Even as we’re all busy obsessing over each new trailer, still and viral for Prometheus, Ridley Scott is looking to the future. Or at least the future of another of his past projects, since he’s been developing ideas for another **Blade Runner **film. Now comes the news that the original film’s writer, Hampton Fancher, is in talks to write the script.
The shape and focus of the new movie has, much like Prometheus, been gradually evolving. At one point, it looked as though it might be a reboot. Then there was talk of something linked, but not directly allied to the 1982 film, as is largely the case with Scott’s current sci-fi release and Alien.
But now producers at Alcon Entertainment are pointing towards the new Blade Runner as an actual sequel, albeit one set some years after that movie and unlikely to feature Harrison Ford. Still, everything remains at the idea stage for now, so who knows what form the final product will take?
However it ends up, there's a chance it'll feature a character wrinkle, with Scott telling The Daily Beast that "We'll definitely be featuring a female protagonist." Scott's one of those directors who tends to do well with female leads (see Alien, Thelma & Louise) so that is promising news.
And the idea of Fancher collaborating with Scott is definitely enticing. Wonder if the other original participant, David Peoples, can be convinced to join up?
