Guilty Wives Head For Hollywood

After years of prolific novel writing and hardly any film adaptations, James Patterson is now storming the walls of Hollywood with his own production company, Patterson Entertainment. His new set-up has already led to a reboot of franchise lynchpin Alex Cross, and next up will be the recently published standalone **Guilty Wives{ =nofollow}. Paul Boardman, Scott Derrickson's frequent screenwriting collaborator, is working on the adaptation.

This one sounds like The Hangover gone even more wrong, and involves four rich women taking a break from their husbands in Monte Carlo. Taking a private helicopter to a swish hotel, they indulge in some general carousal, debauchery and revelry, but wake up on a yacht with bad headaches, two corpses and likely life sentences in the French prison system. Hate when that happens.

The thrust of the plot, of course, is our heroines' fight to find out what really went on and clear their names. It's "the kind of non-stop joyride of excess, friendship, betrayal and danger that only James Patterson can create," gushes the blurb. Except that, as with much of Patterson's enormous output, Guilty Wives was "co-written", in this case with an author called David Ellis. The book has its own little trailer on the YouTubes{ =nofollow}.

Boardman's most recent gig was the screenplay for Atom Egoyan's West Memphis Three drama The Devil's Knot, and he previously wrote The Exorcism Of Emily Rose and Hellraiser 5, both of which Scott Derrickson directed. Derrickson is currently at work on Beware The Night, which he and Boardman co-wrote. Whether he'd be interested in keeping the collaboration going and stepping in front of the camera for this one, remains to be seen.

Guilty Wives is a while away yet, but Alex Cross**, directed by Rob Cohen and starring Tyler Perry and an unrecognisable Matthew Fox, is out in the UK on November 30.
