Back in June, Guillermo Del Toro warned that Hellboy 3 might be some way off. At that time he blamed a tough development process ("the Hellboy screenplays are not quick to write. For whatever reason they end up being very complicated.") but MTV has discovered another potential spanner in the Hellboy 3 works. Namely, Ron Perlman.

"Everyone should ask Ron Perlman," said Del Toro (with, it must be said, a gleam in his eye and mischief in his heart). Seemingly, at dinner the previous evening, the genre-fave actor had expressed some reservations about hours in the make-up chair. "He's doing Sons of Anarchy without make-up. He's spoiled! He likes to be the big cheese without the make-up session."

Joking aside, Del Toro did seem concerned that the story, which the previous films hinted was heading for seriously dark end-times, might not ever be finished. "The heartbreak for me is that I know how it ends and I don't know if I want to see that ending. But I would love to do it."

MTV point out that series creator Mike Mignola is probably okay with that though: in an interview a couple of years ago, the writer lamented that "if Guillermo makes Hellboy 3 and it’s the death of Hellboy, I’m left doing the comic going, ‘but I’m not done yet!’ If Del Toro does my ending, there won't be a lot of surprise when I get there." And when might that be? "It's going to take me fifteen years..."
