As dreadlocked, Nicole-Kidman dating, Jimi-Hendrix-wannabe rockers go, you can't do better than Lenny Kravitz. The flamboyant showman is going to follow in his ex-girlfriend's footsteps when he takes the lead role in Barbeques and Bar Mitzvahs. Although he did make a brief appearance in Zoolander, this will effectively mark Kravitz' film debut. The semi-autobiographical story was created by Kravitz, who is the son of a Jewish TV producer and a black actress. The film will reflect the search for identity that he engaged in as a child, finally settling on music as something that embraced all ethnicities. Although Kravitz, who will take the lead role, plays "a musician searching for love and happiness", he was keen to stress that this will be a change from his previous career. ""It's not a music movie, which is cool," Kravitz said. "There are no concert scenes or anything. It's about someone in my particular position growing up between two cultures. It's like 'Annie Hall' or 'Manhattan.'" Hmm. Clearly, Kravitz is aiming high, but we hope that even if he doesn't quite reach the heights of Woody Allen's golden years he at least succeeds in making another 8 Mile rather than another Glitter. While other roles have yet to be cast, Kravitz obviously has some possibilities among his celebrity friends. "I have some people in mind and people who have expressed interest, but nothing's on paper." The film will shoot next spring and should hit cinemas later next year, and for those tempted to walk out early, remember: it ain't over till it's over.
