The first film has only just finished shooting in Louisiana (the production wrapped last week), but Warner Bros. really is shoving ahead with its plans to turn Green Lantern into a franchise. Following up the announcement in June of a treatment in the works for the sequel comes word that Michael Goldenberg has been hired to start getting a script ready.

It’s not his first experience writing for the character – he was actually brought in to work as a script doctor as the first film began production, so he would seem to be a natural choice to flesh out the work that has already been started by Michael Green, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim.

Goldenberg also has experience with one of the studio’s other big franchises, since he scripted Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when regular Potter scribe Steve Kloves stepped out for a moment.

Green Lantern is now a little under a year away from release (it hits cinemas on June 17) and we’d guess the DC Entertainment bods are hoping to get the sequel started early should the film prove to be a success.

With Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong among the cast, the movie will now spend months in post-production while director Martin Campbell slots in the effects and fine-tunes the hero’s CG costume.
