It's fair to say that Warner Bros.' decision to release its entire 2021 slate of movies on HBO Max (and other streaming venues elsewhere) as well as in cinemas was a controversial one at the very least. Filmmakers were unhappy, cinema chains were naturally worried and co-producers, such as Legendary, looked to change their deals. In the wake of Warners working things out with the latter – at least over Godzilla Vs. Kong, the monster match-up will now arrive in March.

That's the Stateside release plan right now, which maintains the cinema/HBO Max split and will still have to worry about a severe lack of open venues if America's current coronavirus status remains the same in March. It does, however, offer the chance for a big release in China.

With Adam Wingard in the director's chair, Godzilla Vs. Kong continues the story of the giant creature feature(s) that has been running through films such as Godzilla: King Of The Monsters and Kong: Skull Island. And, according to the official synopsis: "The two most powerful forces of nature, clash in a spectacular battle for the ages. As a squadron embarks on a perilous mission into fantastic uncharted terrain, unearthing clues to the Titans’ very origins and mankind’s survival, a conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever."

The new US release date is 26 March, while the UK still has a 21 May release listed, but we can expect that to change. How it is released here will, of course, depend on our own Corona cases. And this move surely means a full trailer will be on the way shortly.

As for fellow Warners/Legendary movie Dune, that film's fate has yet to be decided.
